If you had to guess which age group is experiencing an increasing divorce rate, you’d probably guess young adults. After all, it makes sense that getting married at a young age can be risky and increase the odds of divorce. But a new study has found some surprising news. While the overall divorce rate has fallen in the last 20 years, the divorce rate among married couples aged 40 and older has increased significantly.
According to the new study, “There has been a threefold increase in the divorce rate of people aged between 60 and 65 since 1990, and for those older than 65, the increase is fivefold.” (http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=29300758)
The Baby Boom generation has had a pattern of high marital instability for decades now, and it continues to carry over to today as this aging generation still struggles to make marriages last. It’s a surprising twist to the traditional narrative about young people and divorce.
